Letters from Iwojima (硫黄島からの手紙)

Watched this film just because of Nino. It was a very serious war film on battle between US and Japan during World War II. This movie was directed by Clint Eastwood and it portrays the battle from the perspective of Japanese soldiers. I just learnt that it’s a companion piece to Eastwood’s “Flags of Our Fathers” which films the same battle but from American soldiers viewpoint.

Eastwood doesn’t speak Japanese, and he doesnt know any one of Japanese artists (actors). When he did an audition for the roles in the movie, around 30 artists sent in their video for audition including Nino. Do you know which clip Nino sent for this audition? It’s “Ao No Honoo“, his movies during his early ages, when he was only 19 or 20!! A good actor is always a good actor, and a good director is always good at seeing through it. Nino’s acting might not be as firm as now during Ao no Honoo but Eastwood knows he is born to be a good one, i guess. So Nino is chosen as the role of Saigo. Nino actually applied for the audition for Kase Ryo’s character (Shimizu), but Eastwood feels that Saigo suits him more.

Frankly, i dun really understand 100% of the movie, i mean the background etc. Since i’m not a japanese, i dunno their history, in fact i only know japan has been invading a lot of countries during World War II and japanese soldiers had been very cruel… あせあせ (飛び散る汗) Sorry.. that’s the history i know, although i love the country japan now, but still there are some facts on history that we cannot deny, and since i’m non japanese, it’s hard for me to put myself in their shoes to understand those histories. In a war, the only place we can rely to is still our own country, so no matter of who is right and who is wrong, we have to protect our own country.. In the movie, Shimizu surrendered to the US Army and thought that he finally could get himself out of these torture but in the end he was killed by the US soldier. So, what else can the soldiers do besides keep on marching on and fight against the enemies? Anyway, war is not a good thing and hope that there will be more peaceful days in the whole world.

Oops.. i’m running out of topic? わーい (嬉しい顔)

Nino played Saigo, a young man who was asked to go to war one day leaving his wife and his baby to born behind.

Saigo always wanted to go back quickly and he keeps writing letters to his wife.
He met some of good friends in the war camp but most of them was later killed by the army or forced to commit suicide when their territories were taken by the enemies. Saigo tried very hard to keep himself alive.
He met Shimizu and after many battles they got tired and decided to surrender to the US army. Shimizu went first and he reached the US camp safely but was killed by the US army then… Saigo was very sad to see his corpse and he knew then he has no other way but to keep on fighting, and he knows he will die in Iwojima…

The last scene when the top commander commit suicide in front of him was so sad.. Nino’s acting was sooo fantastic!!

Well… it’s quite a solemn and serious movie, and maybe you’ll find it “boring” あせあせ (飛び散る汗)
But it’s Nino’s first Holywood movie, moreover he was chosen to by Eastwood himself, so it’s worth to watch if you havent watch it 😀

Oh yeah, i bought the first edition DVD which comes together with those clips on makings & interviews.
Nino said he stayed at US for around 1.5 month. He said, he is not very good at travelling, so he miss Japan everyday. Everyday after finish shooting and went back to hotel, he watch those DVD sent to him from Japan and keep thinking of going back to Japan. He needs to tell himself to ganbatte, thinking that maybe he will have 4,5 days holidays after that so that he can go back to Japan a short while? Poor Nino.. he must be very homesick that time.. 泣き顔 He was jokingly that his mood was same as Saigo, hoping to go back to his hometown :p

During a press conference, reporters asked Nino will he invite Clint Eastwood to Arashi’s concert?
Nino was kinda laughing and he said… “urm… yeah.. if there’s a chance although i dunno whether he will come or not.. *LOL*”
The press conference was so serious, and thanks to Nino that all his comments were so playful and brings joy to the event 手 (チョキ)

Just an addition, I also want to share about his press conference at Berlin International Film Festival (Since it is still related with Letter from Iwojima). At that time, he seems to think about something that he didn’t listen when they started to call his name. He just said “yes?” and people started to laugh. So cute!
Clint Eastwood then commented, ” I brought him into the cast because I love these things about him.” ~<3
